About us

Abuse or Ignorance?

These pictures may horrify some people, traumatise others or spark a tinge of guilt in the remainder.

This lovely young animal was brought into the Shelter as you see it with the explanation that it was found in the bush tied up with wire. There was no sign of any wire so the assumption was made that it had been cut off by the rescuers.

The animal must have suffered an amount of pain that I can only imagine, and yet it was friendly, placid and very happy to be handled.

Naturally it was taken to one of our loyal vets who surmised a totally different scenario. Having witnessed similar marks his assumption was that the damage was caused by a rubber band being placed around the neck and because of the longish coat on the animal, was not noticed.

I was quite happy to receive this input but was exceptionally skeptical about it not being noticed.

Maybe it wasn’t noticed, but someone, somewhere had to see the damage that was being done and surely would have had it investigated if they really care for animals.

So maybe it was a child that slipped a band around its neck - so we put it down to ignorance. It was unintentional and forgotten after a period of time, so we cannot consider abuse. That’s the child exonerated. Now what about the Parents, Guardians or elder Siblings?

This injury did not occur over a period of an hour, a day or a week. It occurred over a much longer period so the owner, which cannot be the child, must have seen the injury developing and is therefore culpable for both accusations, and although they unfortunately remain anonymous I trust they read this article and feel as guilty as they should do.

On a lighter note, the BSPCA will, with the help of the Vets, your donations and lots of TLC, endeavour to restore this animal to its former health.

This plucky, friendly dog deserves a second chance. Please – someone offer it a wonderful home. Prove to it that somewhere there is a human it can trust.

Don’t turn a blind eye to cruelty!!!  If you can’t do anything yourself at least contact someone who can!!!

JOHNNY’S APPEAL

Johnny is a crossbreed puppy brought to the BSPCA shelter in April.  He was found by a member of the public on the side of the road and taken to Vet & Agric and they brought him to us.

Due to a wound on his head and an inability to walk on his front legs it was initially believed that he had been hit by a car. However further examination revealed that this was not the case; his front left paw bends inwards hindering his ability to stand and thereby walk. He got around by pulling himself forwards and shuffling. Unfortunately this has resulted in wounds on his legs where they are in contact with the ground.

A lot of time and effort has been put into building up the front leg muscles and teaching him how to walk - literally showing him how to put one leg in front of the other. The untwisting of his spine, and a definable increase in his walking ability has rewarded this effort.  Johnny can now push himself up on his front legs into a  near standing position, and can move around quite quickly - especially if there is a cat to chase after - but he is in constant bandages to stop the scuffing of his legs.

Johnny has an exceptionally sweet and loving personality which wins through his disability.  We are raising money for a surgical procedure to straighten his paw so that  he can walk normally.

Please if you can help Johnny by means of a donation of any size please drop it in at the shelter specifying that it is for Johnny.

Johnny is also looking for a loving home.  He would make an exceptionally loyal and loving companion to any family.  If you feel that you could offer him this then please come by the shelter and meet him.
